ABOUT OUR MOTEL’S SURROUNDINGS – SKENES CREEK, APOLLO BAY, GREAT OCEAN ROAD

Skenes Creek Lodge Motel & Licensed Restaurant, Apollo Bay accommodation on the Great Ocean Road

Above: the Apollo Bay town centre with the Otway Ranges in the background

Apollo Bay (often referred to as “paradise by the sea”) is a small seaside town with a big personality, and a thousand interesting things to do. It is one of Victoria’s most popular tourism hotspots – particularly during the summer months, as visitors travel down to the Great Ocean Road to escape the summer heat.

The town centre (not far from Skenes Creek Lodge Motel & Licensed Restaurant) contains various shops and services of all types – such as bakeries, banks, bookshops, beauticians, day spas and massage therapists, hairdressers, community markets and supermarkets, newsagencies, pharmacies, sports and surf stores – plus a local cinema that plays all the latest release movies, historical museums that educate and exhibit items from our abundant local history, and a public swimming pool to help you cool off on warm days. Apollo Bay is home to the Great Ocean Road Visitor Information Centre, where you can always find assistance to organise local activities and guided tours, or to purchase souvenirs and gifts for friends and family.

If you’re a lover of fine foods, Skenes Creek and Apollo Bay have a great variety of affordable and family-friendly places to eat – such as restaurants, bistros, pubs, wine bars, cafes, coffee shops & tea houses, fish & chip shops, gourmet delicatessens, ice creameries, and takeaway foods – with vegetarians well-catered for too. Since our restaurateurs have access to the freshest produce (from the nearby farms), the freshest seafood (from the nearby waters), and amazing local wines (due to the cooler climate and unique soils of the region), it’s no surprise that we have so many amazing chefs working in the Skenes Creek and Apollo Bay region. No matter where you choose to eat, you will always enjoy your delicious meals with an ocean view, fresh air, and a relaxed atmosphere. As there is such an overwhelming variety of restaurants around, we are always happy to suggest places to try (based on your tastes) whilst you're staying at Skenes Creek Lodge Motel & Licensed Restaurant.

As our Apollo Bay accommodation is central to all of the popular tourist destinations on the Great Ocean Road, why not consider staying here for a long weekend, and use our motel as a base to enjoy all the natural attractions of the Great Ocean Road – such as the Twelve Apostles, the Port Campbell National Park, Lake Elizabeth, the Otway Fly Treetop Walk, the Great Otway National Park, the Cape Otway Lighthouse, the Great Ocean Walk, the Maits Rest Walk, the Melba Gully Walk, the Marengo Reefs Marine Sanctuary – plus many of our scenic waterfalls and rainforests that are highly recommended for a visit.

There are always important events or festivals occurring in the Apollo Bay area throughout the year – such as the Anaconda Adventure Race, the Falls Festival, the Lorne Pier To Pub, the Apollo Bay Seafood Festival, the Great Ocean Sports & Swim Festival, the Kona Odyssey Mountain Bike Marathon, the Apollo Bay & Otway District Agricultural Show, the Apollo Bay Farmers Market, the Apollo Bay Music Festival, the Great Ocean Road Marathon, the Apollo Bay Community Market, and many more. Or have a go at Whale Watching around the cooler months, as you stay at our convenient Apollo Bay accommodation.

If you enjoy recreational activities, Skenes Creek and Apollo Bay is the place to visit for leisure or adrenaline-based sports – such as surfing, swimming, fishing, golfing, hang gliding and paragliding, skydiving, four wheel driving, mountain bike riding, road cycling, sailing, horse riding, lawn bowls, beach and bush walking – many of which can be experienced with a guided tour that are suitable for families of all ages (simply Contact Us at Skenes Creek Lodge Motel & Licensed Restaurant or the Great Ocean Road Visitor Information Centre for more details).

Please refer to our Local Activities page for a lot more ideas on what to see and do whilst you’re staying at our Apollo Bay accommodation. ABOUT OUR MOTEL’S WEATHER – SKENES CREEK, APOLLO BAY, MELBOURNE, VICTORIA

Whilst Skenes Creek and Apollo Bay are warmer in the summer months of December to February, the average daily temperatures are considerably lower than central Melbourne (often by several degrees), making our Skenes Creek and Apollo Bay accommodation a perfect destination to cool off in the summer heat, as we experience refreshing sea breezes from the Southern Ocean and Bass Strait.

Skenes Creek Lodge Motel & Licensed Restaurant, Apollo Bay accommodation on the Great Ocean Road

During the autumn months of March to May, the weather is generally still nice (although milder temperatures) as we occasionally have warm weekends. The surfing conditions are usually at their peak in April (especially if low pressure systems are offshore), and ocean water temperatures are considered to be at their warmest, having increased by several degrees since the start of summer.

The winter months of June to August can sometimes bring a decent amount of rainfall to Skenes Creek and Apollo Bay, but this shouldn’t be seen as a deterrent to visit, as the average daily temperatures are consistently higher than central Melbourne, making Skenes Creek Lodge Motel & Licensed Restaurant a great place to warm up in the winter chill.

The spring months of September to November are perhaps the most ideal times to stay at Skenes Creek and Apollo Bay, as we experience beautiful sunny days with clear blue skies and mild sea breezes – also before the peak tourist season occurs over the summer holidays.

Please refer to the weather chart below for average monthly temperatures and rainfall levels, to help plan your visit to our Skenes Creek and Apollo Bay accommodation. For the latest up-to-date weather information, please refer to the Australian Government's Bureau Of Meteorology website for the Cape Otway weekly forecast and Melbourne's weather radar map. Also refer to WeatherZone’s Apollo Bay weather page and western district forecasts.
